Sam Darnold’s ailing shoulder keeps him out of Jets practice

The Jets are continuing to be cautious with Sam Darnold’s nagging shoulder injury.

Darnold didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice after getting an MRI exam and a second opinion on his right shoulder earlier in the week. Head coach Adam Gase said the MRI didn’t show any further damage and that Darnold is just sore.

After missing Weeks 5 and 6 with an injury to the same shoulder, Darnold may have aggravated it late in Sunday’s blowout loss to the Chiefs. The 23-year-old quarterback was slow to get up after attempting to scramble for a first down in the fourth quarter before he was brought down by two Kansas City defenders. He rose to his feet favoring his right arm, but stayed in the game.

Gase said the Jets want to see what “one more day of rest is going to do” for Darnold and that he expects him to be able to practice Friday.

“Right now I feel pretty good about it,” Gase said of Darnold’s chances of playing Monday against the Patriots. “I think his mindset is that it’ll take something not feeling right for him not to play. We just felt this was a chance to give him one more day of rest.”

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams sat out of practice with a hamstring injury. Gase said he is taking a “wait-and-see” attitude with Williams, who has started every game this season.

“I see him jumping in walk-throughs, I can see where his mindset is really with he doesn’t really want to hear, ‘Hey, you’re hurt,’ type of information,” Gase said. “We’ll see where he’s at toward the end of the week.”

WR Jamison Crowder (groin) didn’t participate in practice, but began doing some strength and conditioning, according to Gase.

“Hopefully we’re moving closer to getting him out here, getting him out there [Friday],” he said.

LB Blake Cashman (hamstrings) and DE Nate Shepherd (back) also sat out. Kicker Sam Ficken (groin), LG Josh Andrews (shoulder), DE John Franklin-Myers (knee), LB Jordan Jenkins (ribs/shoulder) and C Connor McGovern (knee) were all limited. WR Breshard Perriman is entering the next phase of the concussion protocol, meaning he was able to participate on a limited basis in a red no-contact jersey.
