Here are three potential free agent targets for the Mets:
Pitcher Trevor Bauer, Cincinnati Reds
The right-hander is the favorite to win the Cy Young award and has stated he is open to a short contract. Imagine a second-half rotation next season headed by Jacob deGrom, Bauer and Noah Syndergaard (after he returns from Tommy John surgery rehab).
Catcher J.T. Realmuto, Philadelphia Phillies
He’s the best player available on the free-agent market, and the Mets have the need and the money. The only question is whether he wants New York, but the Mets will have the ability to outbid other suitors.
Pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, New York Yankees
The Mets need more than one starting pitcher. Why not pursue somebody already battle-tested in the Big Apple?
