Trump blasts ‘Lincoln Project’ co-founder Steve Schmidt, defends Marsha Blackburn

President Trump blasted Republican “Never Trump” operative Steve Schmidt on Twitter Wednesday after Schmidt called Sen. Marsha Blackburn “an embarrassment.”

The president was responding to a tweet from conservative commentator Greta Van Susteren calling out Schmidt for insulting the Tennessee Republican.

“Because I’ve beaten him and his very few remaining clients so much, and so badly, that he has become a blathering idiot. He failed with John McCain and will fail again with all others. He is a total loser,” Trump posted.

“@MarshaBlackburn is a Tennessee Star, a highly respected WINNER!,” he continued.

Van Susteren on her Twitter account asked why Schmidt was acting so “rude” and said it’s “one thing to disagree w/someone but you get so personal w/name calling and you seem to have a particular willingness to insult women.”

Schmidt responded to a Blackburn tweet Monday that linked to a video of the president returning to the White House after being hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he was treated for the coronavirus.

“President Trump has once again defeated China. Welcome home, @realDonaldTrump,” Blackburn wrote, linking to the video that ended with her campaign sign “Marsha Blackburn US Senator from Tennessee.”

Schmidt quote tweeted her, raising the name of the state’s late Republican senator who served as minority and majority leader of the Senate during his career.

“Howard Baker was once a United States Senator from Tennessee. This woman is a five star fool. What an embarrassment,” he wrote.

Schmidt, a longtime political adviser, is a co-founder of the “Lincoln Project,” a collection of Republican operatives who oppose the Trump administration and actively campaign against him.
