Padres vs. Giants prediction: Why Under is the play

Going into the season, the San Diego Padres were thought to be a breakout team and have been just that. Few figured the San Francisco Giants would enter the weekend in a playoff chase, but they will look to one of their hidden gems to close out the regular season with a victory.

Drew Smyly has been limited by injury this season, but is healthy at just the right time and has recorded 32 strikeouts while giving up just one home run in 21 ¹/₃ innings this season.

The Padres, who are dealing with recent injuries to Mike Clevinger and Dinelson Lamet, likely will be going with a mostly bullpen-type of game. Relief pitching is an area of the roster they addressed at the trade deadline in late August.

After a tough start to the season, each team entered this series with a top five bullpen ERA over the past 30 days and that relief led to the Padres going 12-5-1 to the Under in their past 18 games entering this series.

The Play: Padres-Giants total, Under.
