Yoenis Cespedes owns a first baseman’s mitt, and put it to use during workouts Wednesday.

But the grounders he took at first base were on his own, with Mets officials not at that point they would consider using the veteran outfielder in that role. As it stands, the Mets have Pete Alonso at first base, with Dominic Smith behind him. Matt Adams and Melky Cabrera are also in camp and can play first base.

Cespedes, according to manager Luis Rojas, was given a first baseman’s mitt by Alonso.

“[Cespedes] wants to be involved,” Rojas said. “He was done with his throwing from the outfield. He’s a guy that wants to be on the field and do different things.”

Cespedes worked out at first base in 2018 while rehabbing with the team. In spring training, Cespedes occasionally takes grounders at third base.

“He wants to show you he’s really good everywhere and have fun there,” Rojas said. “I think he has played every position in the book and we’ve definitely had conversations about [first base], but nothing serious yet.”
