Thank you, Macy’s: NYC really needs your fireworks this year

Macy’s isn’t letting New York down: It will give the city some fine fireworks for Independence Day despite the pandemic — albeit not via the traditional show.

Rather than the usual one-night grand display, the retailer will offers lights in the sky over four nights and (in a first) reaching all five boroughs. Five-minute displays will launch from undisclosed locations from June 29 to July 1 and on the Fourth itself.

Though short, they’ll “show Macy’s signature pyrotechnic design and scale,” company leaders vow.

The brevity is aimed at keeping people from gathering to watch. But, “with heights reaching up to 1,000 feet from some firing locations, staying close to home and following social distancing guidelines is the best way to enjoy the show,” the Mayor’s Office says.

NBC’s national broadcast will feature a collection of the shorter sparks, plus the live grand finale, all “choreographed to a rousing score.”

Macy’s storied flagship at Herald Square saw some of the worst looting a few weeks back. It’s good to see that management hasn’t given up on the city as a result — New Yorkers haven’t.

After these last three months, though, we can sure stand some spectacle.
