Five players to watch in abridged 2020 MLB Draft

Here are players to watch in Wednesday’s shortened five-round MLB draft:

Spencer Torkelson, 1B, Arizona State

The righty hitter is widely projected to go first, to the Tigers. A California native, he has homered 48 times in 112 college games.

Austin Martin, 3B/OF, Vanderbilt

No relation to the car Aston Martin, the native of DeLand, Fla. (also the birthplace of Jacob deGrom) has spent time at second base as well as the hot corner and center field with the Commodores.

Asa Lacy, LHP, Texas A&M

“The top arm in the class,” as per MLB.com, the Lone Star State native can throw an above-average fastball, slider and changeup.

Nick Gonzales, 2B, New Mexico State

The Arizona native slugged 12 homers in the first 16 games of his coronavirus-shortened platform season. Like his fellow college players here, he’s a junior.

The University of Florida commit, a lefty bat, ranks as the best high school hitter.
