Brash artist Mark Kostabi rents $14K/month Chelsea townhouse

Artist Mark Kostabi is moving to Chelsea

A gossip column fixture and a brash critic of the art world who rose to fame in the 1980s, Kostabi has rented $14,500-a-month townhouse at 225 W. 22nd St.

Though he signed the lease remotely at the end of May, he will move in on July 1 after more than five years on the Upper East Side. “We were negotiating the deal as COVID-19 and the quarantine hit,” says his broker, Amalia Daskalakis, of Corcoran. “We toured it on March 15, hours before the lockdown was ordered, but the landlord did not feel comfortable moving forward due to the health crisis.”

The four-story townhouse comes with a cast-iron gate and features a private garden.

There are four bedrooms, four woodburning fireplaces and original crown and picture moldings throughout.

The eat-in kitchen has a butler’s pantry and a third-floor master suite has a large ensuite bath and a walk-in closet.

The listing brokers were Louis Rosado and Anne Collins of R New York. Kostabi has had several windfalls this year, selling high-priced pieces to galleries in the US, Italy and South America. (He makes about $3 million a year, art dealer Bruce C. Loch told Artsy in May.)

He’s best known for his “Use Your Illusion” painting, which was the cover art for the Guns N’ Roses album of the same name.

Kostabi’s art has been displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA and the Guggenheim.
