Disney will sell character face masks, donate proceeds to charity

Disney is debuting a batch of adorable face masks featuring characters like Buzz Lightyear, the Avengers and Baby Yoda — and donating all proceeds to charity.

The entertainment giant is releasing the non-medical, reusable cloth masks featuring Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters in line with the CDC’s recommendation to wear face coverings in all public settings during the coronavirus crisis, according to a Thursday statement.

“We realize this is a challenging time for families and wearing any type of mask can be daunting,” Edward Park, senior vice president of Disney store and shopDisney, said in the statement. “Our hope is that Disney’s cloth face masks featuring some of our most beloved characters will provide comfort to the families, fans and communities that are so important to us.”

The masks are available for pre-order now on the company’s web site and all proceeds from US sales, up to $1 million and until Sept. 30, will go to the humanitarian aid organization MedShare.

The masks, available for $19.99 for a four-pack, come in small, medium and large sizes and shipping is estimated for June.

Disney is also donating one million of the masks for children and families in vulnerable communities across the US, including California and Florida, according to the statement. Those masks will be distributed by MedShare.

“Disney’s donations will make a tremendous impact in the communities we serve,” Charles Redding, CEO and president of MedShare, said in the statement. “Their contribution of one million Disney cloth face masks will be provided to families in underserved communities and organizations working to limit the spread of COVID-19, while their monetary donation will be used to support the medical community’s ongoing efforts to provide lifesaving care to those who need it most.”
