Central Park coronavirus hospital will close in early May

The make-shift, 68-bed tent field hospital set up in Central Park to help fight the coronavirus pandemic will close by the second week of May, a source familiar with the phase-out told The Post.

The 14-tent hospital was built in the park’s East Meadow section on the Upper East Side by the evangelical Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse and designed to relieve an overflow of patients from Mount Sinai’s hospitals.

But the worst of the COVID-19 surge has passed, and hospital admissions for the killer bug are down at Mount Sinai’s facilities.

There were just 18 patients at the field hospital Thursday.

Two other temporary hospitals to help the city get through the worst of the pandemic also stopped accepting patients.

The Navy’s floating hospital — the USNS Comfort ship — left New York harbor earlier Thursday and the Army hospital at the Javits Center is closing shop as early as Friday.
