Gmail down for thousands in mysterious global outage

Gmail stopped working properly for thousands of users Wednesday as people struggled to work from home amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to Google.

Problem-tracking website Down Detector said it had received more than 2,500 reports of outages on Google’s email platform from users in the US, UK, Italy, France, and Spain.

The interruption comes less than a month after Gmail and YouTube went down briefly last month.

Google did not immediately return a request for comment, but Gmail responded individually to the flood of complaints on Twitter.

“We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix. We appreciate your patience,” it told one user.

On its own outage-tracking website, Google later announced, “Gmail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future.”

It added, “The problem with Gmail should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
