The Jets agreed to bring back Sam Darnold’s backup from last year on Tuesday.
The team and quarterback David Fales agreed to a one-year deal, according to a source. Fales was signed last September after Trevor Siemian broke his ankle against the Browns in Week 2.
Fales, 29, backed up Luke Falk for two games, was cut then was re-signed to back up Darnold for the rest of the season. Fales appeared in two games but did not attempt a pass.
The Jets still could add a more experienced quarterback to their roster, but Fales will have a chance to compete to be Darnold’s backup. The only other quarterback on their roster is Mike White, who spent last season on the practice squad.
Fales’ knowledge of coach Adam Gase’s offense had to be an attractive quality. Fales played for Gase last year and in 2017-18 with the Dolphins. It seems likely the NFL is going to cancel all of its spring program, including OTAs, due to the coronavirus pandemic. That will leave coaches with less teaching time, so familiarity with the system will help Fales.
Still, the Jets may look to add someone with more of a track record to play behind Darnold. Their franchise quarterback has missed six games in his first two seasons, and the Jets are 0-6 in those games. They have suffered from not having a suitable replacement.
Among backup possibilities, Siemian, Drew Stanton and Joe Flacco are veterans still on the market.
