At least 17 people have died of the coronavirus at a nursing home in northern Germany, according to a new report.
A dozen residents at the Hanns-Lilje retirement home in Wolfsburg succumbed to the deadly bug on Saturday alone — and five more died between Sunday and Monday, Metro UK reported.
A total of 145 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Wolfsburg — a city about 143 miles west of Berlin — the majority of them residents of the nursing home, the outlet reported.
In Germany as a whole, 68,180 cases and 682 deaths have been reported, according to Johns Hopkins University statistics.
The news comes about a week after Spanish soldiers disinfecting nursing homes made the horrifying discovery of some residents living among infectious bodies abandoned in their beds.
In the US, at least 146 nursing homes across 27 states have seen COVID-19 outbreaks, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said in a statement last week.
At the Life Care Center in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland, 129 people — including 81 residents — have contracted the infection and 35 have died, according to reports.
In New Jersey, at least eight people died at the Lakeland Nursing Home in Wanaque, Passaic County.
The infection also made its way into the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mount Airy, Maryland, where 66 people tested positive and two residents — a man over 80 and another in his 90s — succumbed to the illness, WJZ-TV reported.
