Three construction workers injured in Brooklyn trench collapse

Three workers were injured — one of them seriously — when a wall collapsed at a Brooklyn construction site Wednesday, authorities said.

The three men were working in the back of a two-story brick building at 1921-1925 East 14th Street in Sheepshead Bay when they were buried in the rubble around noon, according to authorities.

“They were doing some excavation work,” Fire Chief Frank Abbatemarco of Battalion 33 said at the scene. “One construction worker was pinned under some rubble.”

Firefighters responded to the scene and were able to free the workers, including one who was buried up to his chest in cinder blocks.

That worker was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center in serious but non-life threatening condition, according to authorities.

“They used hand tools and a couple chipping guns on scene and they were able to remove the victim,” Abbatemarco said. “The fire department got on scene rather quickly and they did an excellent job.”

The other two workers were taken to New York Community Hospital. Police said their injuries were also non-life threatening.

The workers were removing tree stumps from the rear yard of the building at 1925 and dug a trench about 4 or 5 feet deep during the work, the city said.

Inspectors from the city Department of Buildings arrived on the scene shortly after the incident, the department said.

According to city building, records the struture at 1925 has no open violations. The adjoining building has one open violation dating to 1997.
