The XFL has scrapped the rest of its revival season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The COVID-19 pandemic, and the most recent local and state regulations, have left the XFL no choice but to officially cancel the remainder of the 2020 season,” the league said in a statement. “This decision has been made with the health and safety of the entire XFL family as our top priority. While we are disappointed to not complete the 2020 season, our hearts are full of appreciation for your overwhelming support.”
The Vince McMahon-backed spring football league had been dealing with declining ratings and attendance since a strong debut weekend Feb. 9.
The original XFL lasted just one season in 2001, but the current league was created to rely less on professional wrestling-type elements and concentrate more on rules aimed at speeding up the NFL game.
The eight-team league included the New York Guardians, who were 3-2 under coach Kevin Gilbride before play was suspended on March 8 with five regular-season games remaining.
Other professional leagues, including the NBA, NHL and MLB suspended play due to the virus.
