Park Slope elementary school parent tests positive for coronavirus

A Park Slope elementary school will remain open after a parent tested positive for coronavirus Thursday, The Post has learned.

PS 107 Principal Eve Litwack told parents in an email Thursday that the father pulled his kids out of class on Tuesday as a precaution after feeling ill with what he thought was jet lag. But the parent received a coronavirus confirmation Thursday and quickly alerted school administrators.

His children, Litwack stressed, have not shown any signs of illness.

The principal sent out an email alert Thursday afternoon, prompting several parents to immediately yank their kids from class, sources said.

“Anyone who wishes to pick up their child or keep their child at home is welcome to do so at this time,” Litwack wrote.

Heightening fears, the parent attended a recent open house at the school on March 6 and interacted with other parents and staffers, sources said.

Litwack’s email said she immediately contacted district officials Thursday after learning of the parent’s diagnosis and that she was told to stay operational.

“The Superintendent’s office has stated that school will remain open,” she wrote.

Students were removed Thursday from two classrooms that had been occupied by the parent’s children and administrators said they would be cleansed Thursday night.

The department and City Hall have said that they would close individual schools with confirmed cases of student coronavirus.

The city shuttered a Bronx school building Thursday after the parents of a student reported that he had tested positive for coronavirus.

If confirmed independently, it would be the first case of a student carrying the contagion.

“We’re making decisions in real time in the best interest of our students and staff, and following guidance from the State and City Health Departments,” said DOE spokesperson Miranda Barbot. “We’re continuing to monitor and our current protocol is to close if there is a confirmed member of the student body or staff.”
