Mets great David Wright happy with special adviser role

PORT ST. LUCIE — David Wright called his special adviser role with the Mets “what I’m kind of looking for at this stage. It’s perfect for me.”

The retired third baseman attended the winter meetings and is spending a week with the Mets at spring training. He’ll also be at Citi Field “here and there” during the season.

On Tuesday, he talked to the team’s minor leaguers and to the minor league hitting coaches.

He said he’s not currently looking for a more permanent position with the organization.

Wright also had praise for new manager Luis Rojas, who was the manager at St. Lucie during some of Wright’s rehab assignments.

“I got a chance play for him and he seems like he’s gonna be great because he never gets too high or too low,’’ Wright said. “He’s always the same guy.”

J.D. Davis’ return from a jammed left shoulder is going well. He had two more hits on Wednesday, including a two-run homer, during a 7-3 win over the Cardinals at Clover Park. Davis also played left field and expressed a willingness to move to right if Michael Conforto is sidelined in the regular season.

While the big names in the bullpen looked good, Brad Brach gave up three hits, including a double and a homer, in just two-thirds of an inning.

Jake Marisnick made a nice catch in center with Dellin Betances on the mound. Betances took note of the defense-minded Marisnick’s heroics: “He ran that ball down and saved a run.”

The Mets are off Thursday and are scheduled to return to action Friday to face the Braves in North Port, Fla., to start a two-game stint on the state’s Gulf Coast.
