Giants awarded three extra picks in NFL draft

The Giants decided not to pursue safety Landon Collins in free agency a year ago and believed that loss would significantly factor into the formula to bring back a third-round compensatory pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. That belief became reality Tuesday when the Giants were awarded three extra picks in the upcoming draft.

The Giants gained an extra selection in the third round (99th overall) and two more in the seventh round (Nos. 247 and 255). As it stands now, No. 255 is the final pick in the draft, giving the Giants the opportunity to take Mr. Irrelevant.

The additional third-round pick will come 31 spots after the Giants would have selected if they did not trade for defensive tackle Leonard Williams. That deal with the Jets cost the Giants their third-rounder, No. 68 overall, and a conditional pick that will be a fourth or fifth-rounder in 2021. The Giants now have 10 total picks. The good news: Three of the picks come in the top 99. The bad news: Four of the picks are in the seventh round.

The Giants were one of six teams to receive three compensatory picks. The Patriots lead the league with four comp picks.

With the uncertainty concerning the collective bargaining agreement, the deadline to place the franchise or transition tag on players was pushed back to Monday. The deadline was previously set for this Thursday. So, the Giants gain a few extra days to decide if they will secure Williams with a tag or allow him to enter the open market in free agency.
