Mets’ J.D. Davis avoids serious injury with shoulder scare

PORT ST. LUCIE – J.D. Davis is sore, but appears to have avoided the worst from the hard landing on his left shoulder the previous day.

An MRI exam performed Wednesday on the Mets left fielder/third baseman revealed no new damage to the shoulder, according to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen. But Van Wagenen noted that swelling was found, in addition to an old injury. Davis termed the previous injury as a labrum tear.

“It didn’t show a ton of inflammation, which is good,” Van Wagenen said at Clover Park. “And it really didn’t show any new structural damage to his shoulder.”

Davis is expected to rest the shoulder into next week and then be re-evaluated.

Davis sustained the injury Tuesday during a diving play at third base. He remained on the ground for a prolonged stretch before walking off the field with the trainer.

“Just a little achy and sore, no sharp pains, and I’ve got full range in my shoulder right now, and it’s just a little weak, but I am feeling good,” Davis said. “Shoulders can be tricky, so first day it’s going to be just rehabbing and then just go from there and progress back to baseball activities.”

Davis indicated he was unaware of the previous labrum tear.

“I never had symptoms of it, which is a relief, because when [the doctor] said it had a little tear and said it looked like an old injury, so I was instantly relieved about it,” Davis said.

Van Wagenen projected a sense of relief.

“He’s going to stay here and he’s a little achy, but achy is a good feeling relative to where we could have been,” Van Wagenen said. “We’ll see how that achiness responds and hopefully we get him on a good track.”
