Coronavirus spreads to Croatia, Austria after Italy outbreak

The coronavirus is spreading to new European countries after the emergence of a cluster of cases in Italy, according to reports.

Croatia and Austria both confirmed their first cases of the virus Tuesday as the number of cases in Italy jumped to 283, CNN reported.

The Croatian patient, a young man, was quarantined at a Zagreb hospital with mild symptoms after recently traveling to Italy, the report said.

Meanwhile, Austria reported that two people, whose identities weren’t released, tested positive in the city of Innsbruck, CNN reported.

The country neighbors the coronavirus-stricken Italian territory of Veneto, though there have been no efforts to close the border.

There have also been cases in the Italian regions of Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont.

Italy now has the highest number of coronavirus infections outside of Asia, with 54 new cases reported Tuesday, the outlet reported.

The death toll in the country stands at seven, all of whom were elderly people with most reporting pre-existing conditions.
