Laura Dern’s best awards moment didn’t even happen at the Oscars

Laura Dern may have walked away with the Best Supporting Actress trophy at the 2020 Oscars — but her biggest honor of the weekend was a serenade from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles.

“We wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the gayest moments in other films that you may not have realized were gay,” host Aubrey Plaza said at Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards when introducing the beloved chorus. The group is famed for its hilarious song tributes, including one to actor Shia LaBeouf in 2014.

The Independent Spirit song tribute name-checked Idina Menzel in “Uncut Gems,” Jennifer Lopez pole-dancing to Fiona Apple in “Hustlers,” Renée Zellweger’s entire press tour and “The kid from ‘Marriage Story,’ probably one day” — before turning into a full-on homage to Dern, 53.

“Laura Dern ordering a kale salad, Laura Dern dressed slutty in court, just all of Laura Dern,” the chorus sang while Dern enthusiastically laughed and applauded in the audience.

“Did this . . . really happen?” Dern captioned an Instagram post of the performance.

Dern, along with the entire cast of “Marriage Story,” won the Robert Altman ensemble award at Independent Spirit before taking home her first Best Supporting Actress Oscar on Sunday. The second-generation star had previously been nominated twice, for “Rambling Rose” and “Wild at Heart.”
