Australian Open draw: Coco Gauff, Venus Williams set for another first-round clash

Coco Gauff became an overnight sensation when she ousted Venus Williams in the first round of last year’s Wimbledon, kick-starting the then-14-year-old’s magical run to the fourth round.

Now the teenage tennis star is hoping her Australian Open appearance begins the same way as she’ll meet Venus once again in the first round of the first major of 2020.

Gauff, 15, will be the youngest woman in the field, while the 39-year-old Williams will be the oldest. Gauff was the youngest qualifier in Wimbledon history when she defeated Williams in straight sets, ultimately falling to eventual champion Simona Halep in the Round of 16.

Williams’ sister Serena and Naomi Osaka are also on that side of the bracket, with the Gauff-Venus winner potentially meeting Osaka in the third round, while the winner of that match could face Serena in the quarterfinals.

Serena just won the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, her first tournament win in three years and her first since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., who was in attendance for the victory.
