Video shows boy scaring away men who tried to lure him into car with candy

A brave 10-year-old Utah boy yelled for help and picked up a handful of rocks to scare away a group of men who tried to lure him into their car with candy, frightening new video shows.

Grayden Dowland, of Riverton, was walking only two doors down — about 200 feet — from his basketball coach’s home to his own around 6:20 p.m. Thursday when three strange men in a white four-door sedan started following him.

“They said, ‘Hi’ and I started walking faster,” Grayden told KSTU. “And they said, ‘Get in the backseat, we have some candy.’”

But Grayden didn’t stop for a second — and ran down a path through his family’s lawn to the front door, which was locked.

Those terrifying moments were captured on his family’s doorbell camera, posted to Facebook by his mother, Kristin VanAmen Dowland.

He is shown glancing back at the trio’s car, which was stopped in front of his neighbor’s house in reverse.

Once Grayden fails to enter his home, the car’s rear lights shine as the suspects speed closer to him in reverse.

Then he made a run for it, screaming, “Mom! Mom! Get away! Get away!,” the local station reported.

He darted into his neighbor’s house, the door of which luckily was open, he told the outlet.

But the men horrifyingly pulled into another neighbor’s driveway and waited for minutes.

“It was really real,” his dad, David Dowland, told the local station. “I saw the video and it’s gut-wrenching.”

“Less than 200 feet, I mean if kids can’t walk two doors down at 6 o’clock at night, that’s scary,” he added. “[Grayden] was scared to death.”

Grayden’s mother commended his bravery on Facebook.

“He did awesome!!!” she wrote. “Ran home yelling and grabbing rocks along the way.”

Meanwhile, Riverton police are hunting for the suspects, whom they describe as in their 30s or 40s with no facial hair.
