Tesla’s Autopilot feature involved in at least 12 crashes in US

A Tesla driving on Autopilot rear-ending a parked police cruiser in Connecticut last Saturday, becoming the 12th crash in three years that may be tied to the driverless system, according to US auto investigators.

A Tesla Model 3 rear-ended the cop car on Interstate 95 near Norwalk, sparking an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Last Saturday’s crash is the 12th incident involving the Autopilot feature on the electric cars that will be investigated by the special investigation team from the agency.

There’s been at least three fatal crashes in the US involving the system since 2016.

The Connecticut crash was the latest vehicular mishap for Tesla’s creator, Elon Musk, who recently unveiled a futuristic new “electric pickup truck” that was supposed to be literally bulletproof.

But the defenses of the truck were put to the test in a public display in late November, and the car’s window cracked when the truck’s chief designer chucked a metal ball at it.

“Oh my f—ing God,” Musk uttered on stage after the window cracked. “Well, maybe that was a little too hard.”
