Pat Shurmur agrees with Giants co-owner Steve Tisch and anyone else unhappy with the 2-10 record.
Given a chance to throw his support behind the embattled Shurmur, Tisch told NBC New York it has been a “frustrating season” that will prompt some “very honest” conversations about the future between ownership at the end of the season. Shurmur reacted to those comments after Wednesday’s practice.
“I’m sure he’s disappointed with the results this season, just like I am and we are,” Shurmur said. “I’m trying to get this team ready to play and win a game against Philly.”
Shurmur tries to tune out external noise – he said he was “made aware” of Tisch’s comments – but it would be impossible not to hear second-hand of reports of his possible replacements.
“I feel like I’m coaching for my job every day,” Shurmur said. “That’s the way we function. As players you are playing for your job, and you are coaching for your job, every day. We understand this is a results business.”
NFL Network reported the Giants will be interested in Cowboys coach Jason Garrett – Kerry Collins’ former backup quarterback – if he is fired. And it doesn’t take much effort to connect fired Panthers coach Ron Rivera to the Giants.
Rivera was the only head coach Giants general manager Dave Gettleman worked with during his four years with the Panthers. Giants offensive coordinator Mike Shula – a possible holdover for quarterback Daniel Jones’ development – and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey both worked under Rivera.
“The ultimate result is winning games,” Shurmur said. “Along the way, doing the things necessary to win a game, and then consistently win. That’s just the reality of it.”
The Giants are one loss away from tying the franchise’s all-time record for longest losing streak (nine). Eight is the longest since 2004, during the first year of Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin.
Manning is likely to make his first start since Week 2 against the Eagles on Monday Night Football. The Eagles have won nine of the last 10 meetings.
A midseason vote of confidence from ownership for Jets coach Adam Gase preceded a three-game winning streak.
Shurmur and cornerback Janoris Jenkins met to discuss Jenkins’ post-game criticisms aimed at defensive coordinator James Bettcher for not properly using him in the scheme by restricting him to one side of the field rather than allowing him to shadow the opponent’s top receiver.
“It was great [conversation],” Shurmur said. “What I speak to the player about I keep between the player and myself.”
Jenkins declined to speak to reporters in the locker room. Asked by The Post if he wanted to clarify any of his remarks, he said, “No.” He has a history of backtracking controversial remarks by claiming they were misconstrued.
Safety Jabrill Peppers (back) will sit out his second straight game, Shurmur said. Tight end Rhett Ellison (concussion) could join him.
Golden Tate (concussion) is back on the practice field and is trending in the right direction, while Evan Engram’s status (foot) will be decided later in the week. He is beyond his original two-to-four-week timetable.
“I’m going to work my butt off this week,” Engram said. “Recovery was going really well, then it kind of hit a little plateau. I’ll work with the trainers and do what’s best for the team.”
