The Warriors have been banged up this season, and now the injury bug has hit Steve Kerr.
Kerr — who hasn’t been a part of this much losing as Golden State’s coach until this season — cut his right hand breaking a clipboard during a rare win on Wednesday night. The Warriors, who recorded a 104-90 home win over the Bulls, are still just 4-15 and 2-7 at the Chase Center, their new home court.
“It’s a mere flesh wound. I broke a clipboard. It’s one of two. I’m allotted two a year. This was No. 1,” said Kerr, who broke it during a stretch of careless play and poor transition defense. “It always cuts in the same place. This was a little deeper one, I was a little more upset. I’m day to day. No stitches yet but we’ll see tomorrow.
Blood on the clipboard told players their coach was hurt.
“He’s writing a play up and he’s actively wiping blood up off the clipboard,” Omari Spellman said.
The Warriors received a boost from Draymond Green, who returned from a three-game absence because of a sore right heel and contributed seven points, eight assists and five rebounds in nearly 24 minutes. But Golden State remains without Stephen Curry, who said recently he will need a second surgery on his broken left hand but still hopes to play this season, Klay Thompson (left knee) and D’Angelo Russell (right thumb).
Thompson also served as a guest analyst during the game.
Eric Paschall scored 25 points to lead the Warriors, who emphatically closed out a game for a change.
As for Kerr, he told reporters he believes his hand will be fine heading into the Warriors five-game trip that starts in Miami on Friday.
“I’m day to day at this point,” Kerr said with a smile. “No stitches yet, but we’ll see [Thursday]. There was blood on the clipboard. Maybe that should be the headline for your story.”
