Baby found dead in dorm bathroom at Ohio college

Authorities are investigating after the body of a baby was found inside a garbage bag at an Ohio college dorm.

The dead newborn was discovered around 10:48 a.m. Friday by a school maintenance worker in a dorm bathroom at Hiram College, which is 40 miles southeast of Cleveland, news station WEWS-TV reported.

No cause of death has been released, but Hiram police has launched an investigation with state authorities.

School officials are urging the mother –who hasn’t been identified — come forward to seek medical treatment.

“She should feel free to come forward to get medical attention and to come forward to anybody at the college for help for counseling—to make sure she gets to the appropriate places in a very timely way,” school president Lori Varlotta told the news station.

Varlotta said counseling is being offered on the private liberal arts college campus, which has around 1,100 students enrolled.

“We’re in a state of shock. We are mourning as a campus community,” Varlotta told WEWS. “We’re a small community, a very kind and caring one, so this has taken us by surprise and we are doing everything we can to restore a sense of health and good welfare for our students and our faculty and staff.”
