Green ‘shamrock puppy’ born in litter of Great Danes
One of these pups is certainly not like the others – thanks to its green, yes green, hue.
Colorado resident Caddy Williams could not believe her eyes after her 3-year-old Great Dane named Ami gave birth to a litter of nine Great Dane puppies, including one very special one that was born green.
“It was so shocking when she was born,” Williams of Canon City told KRDO-TV of the newborn female dog aptly named Verdant.
Williams said that when the puppies were born she wrote down their matching coat color and pattern and as the green pup came into the world she initially thought it was black.
“It was dark,” Williams said of the No. 8 pup. “So I finally got out my phone flashlight — and she was green!”
A chemical called biliverdin, which makes bile, is the reason behind the unique, green-coloring of the pooch, according to Rover.com, which noted that the condition is rare, but not dangerous.
Biliverdin dyes the fur while in the mother’s womb, but the green coating doesn’t last forever.
It ultimately fades away over time.
“She’s healthy and beautiful and she nurses so well,” Williams told KRDO-TV of Verdant. “I just love her. She’s like a little shamrock puppy.”
As for Ami and the rest of the Great Dane pups, they’re doing well.
“She’s a great first-time mom and taking care of her little ones,” said Williams.
