Neil Patrick Harris on board for ‘Matrix 4’ sequel

Neil Patrick Harris popped the red pill.

The “How I Met Your Mother” alum will join “The Matrix 4” along with Keanu Reeves (returning as Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (reprising her role as Trinity), for the fourth installment, Variety reports. No further information was released about Harris’ character.

Co-creator Lana Wachowski is back to write and direct the film, which will be the latest installment of a futuristic tale examining the collision of technology, virtual reality and the fall of humanity.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, star of HBO’s upcoming “Watchmen” series, was previously confirmed as a newcomer to the project — possibly as a young version of Morpheus, originally played by Laurence Fishburne.

The franchise included two follow-ups to the original 1999 movie — “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” both released in 2003. The films have brought in more than $1.6 billion globally, according to Variety.

In August, Wachowski told the trade publication that it seems like a good time to revisit the world of “The Matrix,” whose initial installment won four Oscars.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” she said. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
