Former President Jimmy Carter didn’t let a black eye and 14 stitches stop him from rallying volunteers for a Habitat for Humanity project in Nashville on Sunday.
Carter, who turned 95 last Tuesday, fell earlier Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, but still made it to the stage at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with his 92-year-old wife, Rosalyn, that evening.
Wearing an Atlanta Braves ball cap and his left eye visibly swollen despite a bandage, Carter told the crowd that he had to get stitched up but “I had a No. 1 priority and that was to come to Nashville and build houses.”
He is the first president to reach the milestone of living to 95.
The Carters were introduced by country stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
The project the Carters were supporting is expected to build 21 homes in a Nashville neighborhood.
