Video shows violent brawl breaking out at South African mall

A wild brawl broke out at a mall in South Africa Saturday when a rowdy mob attacked security guards who were trying to kick them out at closing time, according to news reports.

Videos of the melee show the chaotic clash unfold, with the mob atop a set of escalators at the Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town hurling objects at security guards below.

The footage, posted by Cape Town’s News4, shows the security guards throwing several objects back as they try to in vain to move up the escalators to remove the youths.

Twitter video posted by campetownetc.com shows another wild scene, as a mob charges into the food court hurling kicks and punches at guards as well as people who appear to be bystanders.

Canal Walk later posted on Facebook that the youths “refused to leave after closing and reacted violently, attacking some security guards while being escorted out of the centre.”

One of the guards was rushed to the hospital with minor injuries, and Western Cape police said two people were charged with assault. But mall officials said the incident is still under review.

“The centre has a zero-tolerance stance on behavior like this and to create a safer shopping environment, the centre will be clamping down on all anti-social behaviour, enforcing the no-loitering policy and reserving the right to admission,” the statement said.
