A New Jersey prison nurse was busted for allegedly accessing confidential medical records to help further her illicit relationship with an inmate, authorities said Monday.
Charita Wimberley of Edison was arrested Thursday and charged with official misconduct, using databases for criminal activity and accessing a database to obtain services, according to the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office.
The 42-year-old woman allegedly had a relationship with one of the inmates, although the prosecutor’s office did not release any details of the relationship or the age of the inmate.
“The investigation conducted by the NJDOC Special Investigation Division revealed that Ms. Wimberley used her position as a contract nurse with NJDOC to access confidential medical records and databases to facilitate an illicit relationship with an inmate at the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility,” said Acting Hunterdon County Prosecutor Michael Williams.
She is also accused of pretending to be someone else while transmitting money to the inmate to “further the relationship,” according to court papers.
The prison in Clinton houses more than 600 youth-convicted criminals, ranging in age from teenagers to adults, according to the facility’s website.
The contracted nurse was released pending a future court date, which was not disclosed.
Wimberley’s LinkedIn lists her as a licensed nurse at the prison since February 2018. She is also listed as a nurse at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
The nurse, who was contracted to work for the prison through Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, has been banned from all NJDOC facilities, according to a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.
Rutgers UBHC could not be reached for comment.
