New Yorkers melt for M&M’s at Halloween

No trick here: New Yorkers think M&M’s are the ultimate treat at Halloween.

The candy that melts in your mouth, not in your hands, is the favorite Halloween treat statewide, according to research by the machinery-resale website Bid On Equipment — yes, you read that correctly. It’s also tops in six other states: Nevada, Texas, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and Florida.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, however, dominated the overall confectionery competition, finding the popularity sweet spot in 12 states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Michigan, New Hampshire and Maine.

M&M’s were also the favored treat in several large cities, including New York City; San Antonio, Texas; San Diego; Fort Worth, Texas; and Columbus, Ohio.

To find out what candy is dandy in all 50 states and the 20 largest metropolitan areas, the site analyzed Google search trends for more than 100 candy brands between September and October 2018.

One of the strangest findings: Louisiana’s favorite Halloween candy is Airheads. Should we blame New Orleans?

Bid On Equipment also conducted a survey of 2,004 people nationwide and found that 52 percent of them said they would like to move Halloween to the last Saturday in October, rather than annually holding it on the 31st.

In addition, respondents thought the cutoff age for trick-or-treaters should be 15 years old. Spoilsports!
