Kanye West is coming to the really big screen.
IMAX has announced that it will be screening a film tied with Kanye West’s upcoming album “Jesus Is King.” The news comes on the hip-hop heels of the rapper’s surprise outer-borough appearance over the weekend.
Excerpts from the upcoming film — inspired by West’s conspicuous yet somewhat exclusive Sunday Services held in LA, Chicago, Wyoming and Dayton, Ohio, during 2019 — were screened in Detroit and Chicago over the weekend at private listening parties.
According to the press release, the film “brings Kanye West’s famed Sunday Service to life in the Roden Crater, visionary artist James Turrell’s never-before-seen installation in Arizona’s Painted Desert. This one-of-a-kind experience features songs arranged by West in the gospel tradition along with music from his new album ‘Jesus Is King’ — all presented in the immersive sound and stunning clarity of IMAX.”
As fans anticipate the double release, Christian activists are decrying the 42-year-old rapper for his blasphemous use of religious iconography and profiting off their culture.
“People who follow Christ sense something is not right with this scene,” said Charlene Kaleina, a 68-year-old Christian, in an interview with The Post last week.
That didn’t stop West from showing up Sunday at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral in Jamaica, Queens. Clips promptly popped up on Twitter and have already racked up more than 640,000 views.
And ‘Ye didn’t come alone. TMZ reported that wife, Kim Kardashian, baby North, bestie Jonathan Cheban, designer Alexander Wang and fellow musicians Akon and Swizz Beatz were also in the house.
Alas, West still has not confirmed an official release date for his new album — but we do know its companion film’s global IMAX premiere is set for Friday, Oct. 25.
