Dallas man fatally shoots suspected burglar — then goes back to bed

A Dallas man fatally shot a suspected burglar outside his home — then went back to bed before calling cops, a report said.

James Michael Meyer, 72, even waited for his wife to call a lawyer before reporting the incident to police several hours after the shooting, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Meyer told police he woke up to a noise outside his Old East Dallas home at around 5 a.m. Thursday, and looked out the window to see someone trying to break into his storage shed.

He said he grabbed his handgun and ran outside yelling at the alleged thief who took several steps towards him, according to the report.

Meyer said he fired the gun and the man fled into a nearby park — but not before the homeowner said he fired another shot “into the night.”

He said he didn’t know the shots hit the man — let alone that he had mortally wounded him — so he went back to bed.

When the sun came up, Meyer told police he saw a “black bag” on the ground outside his house. When he looked closer, he claims he realized it was a body.

His wife called a lawyer before Meyer picked up the phone and called 911, the Morning News said.

He told cops he threw the shell casings in the trash.

Meyer was charged with murder and was being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.
