A convicted murderer who was captured in New York state after escaping from an Arkansas prison while wearing a guard uniform 10 years ago has busted out of the slammer once again, officials said.
The Arkansas Department of Corrections said Monday that Calvin Adams, 49, was confirmed missing after a search of the East Arkansas Regional Unit in the community of Brickeys.
On May 29, 2009, Adams and Jeffrey Grinder, both serving life without parole for capital murder, strolled out of the Cummins facility in Grady, located about 90 miles southeast of Little Rock, wearing guard uniforms and fled in a car that was left for them in the prison’s parking lot.
They were captured four days later in Hornell, NY, where they jumped out of the vehicle, which bore Missouri tags, and led authorities on a brief foot chase.
Adams was convicted of capital murder in 1995 in the kidnapping and shooting death the year before of Richard Austin, 25. Austin’s wife was wounded and walked more than a mile for help.
Video surveillance showed Adams and Grinder putting on the uniforms in the prison library after an evening head count. Making guard uniforms is among the jobs available for inmates at the prison.
They walked out of the prison unchallenged during a shift change soon afterward.
