Adam Gase hints at shake-up of Jets’ offensive line

Jets coach Adam Gase sounds like he is considering some changes along his offensive line.

The line has been terrible in the Jets’ first three games and the offense could barely function two weeks ago against the Patriots. Gase had time to study the line issues during the bye week. He did not say he will definitely make changes, but he strongly hinted at it Monday.

“We have to keep looking and figure out [who] are the best five guys for us,” Gase said. “Those discussions are always going to happen. It’s the way the NFL is structured. When you’re 0-3 and things stay the same, then that’s our fault. We have to figure out what the best thing to do is moving forward.”

The Jets have given up 13 sacks and are averaging 3.0 yards per rushing attempt. Running back Le’Veon Bell has been hit behind the line of scrimmage way too often.

The most obvious switch the Jets could make is at center where Ryan Kalil has struggled mightily. Jonotthan Harrison spent most of the offseason as the starting center until the Jets signed Kalil out of retirement in early August. The Jets could turn back to Harrison.

They also have Tom Compton and Alex Lewis backing up the guards. It is possible one of them could get a shot.

“We’re going to work through that this week and kind of figure out what’s best for us to do for Sunday,” Gase said. “All those guys know we’re coming in this week and competing and we’re going to put the five guys that we think give us our best chance out there. I’m not really sure who that’s going to be quite yet.”

Sam Darnold is not the only player the Jets don’t sound optimistic about for Sunday’s game. LB C.J. Mosley (groin) was expected to be back this week, but Gase sounded pessimistic about his chances on Monday.

Gase said it does not look like Mosley will practice Wednesday and with each day he misses, it becomes more unlikely he will play. Mosley suffered the injury in the Week 1 loss to the Bills and has missed the past two games.

Mosley said he has been able to run straight, but has not been able to cut yet. Mosley said it is tricky to test the groin because if he goes full-speed he could aggravate the injury.

“I don’t want to rush it and make it worse than it already is,” Mosley said.

DL Quinnen Williams (ankle) is expected to return Sunday after missing two games. … It sounds like OLB Jordan Jenkins (calf) will also miss this week. Gase said he is not expected to practice Wednesday. … WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) is “trending in the right direction,” Gase said. … WR Josh Bellamy (shoulder) is week-to-week. … Gase said there is no plan to sign a backup QB yet in case Darnold can’t play Sunday. The Jets have Mike White on their practice squad. He was signed by them last week and has never played in an NFL game.
