Giants report card: Defense finally shines

Grading the Giants after their 24-3 win Sunday over the Washington Redskins.

Offense

OK, raise your hand if you picked up and activated Wayne Gallman for your fantasy football team? Filling in for Saquon Barkley, Gallman (18-63 rushing, 6-55 receiving) scored two touchdowns (and also lost a late fumble). Daniel Jones (23 of 31, 225 yards, TD) looked like a rookie with two interceptions but he kept his cool and his 16-yard scramble was a thing of beauty. No sacks, but not the cleanest work up-front. Two holding penalties on Mike Remmers, one on Kevin Zeitler and too many hits on Jones. Four turnovers won’t cut it most games.

Grade: C+

Defense

There is the splash play the Giants were waiting for out of S Jabrill Peppers, who took an interception back 32 yards for a touchdown. Rookie LB Ryan Connelly came up with his second interception in as many weeks, this time off a deflected pass by Janoris Jenkins. Jackrabbit came back in a big way off a terrible performance in Tampa with two interceptions of rookie Dwayne Haskins. This was domination against a shabby opponent: Four interceptions, 55 rushing yards allowed, three sacks, three points given up. When do they play the Redskins next?

Grade: A.

Special teams

TJ Jones muffed his first punt return, forcing the offense to start on the 6-yard line. Jones called for a fair catch the next time, he muffed it and recovered it again. Not good. For the third punt return, Jones was replaced by Peppers. Jones eventually did get a reprieve. Excellent coverage by Antonio Hamilton on 57-yard punt by Riley Dixon. It was another strong showing by Dixon — he had a 55-yard punt out of bounds on the Washington 5-yard line. Aldrick Rosas hit his only field goal try, from 30 yards.

Grade: B+

Coaching

Good job by Pat Shurmur using two timeouts on defense late in second quarter to save time for his offense to get a last-second field goal before halftime. Shurmur continued his aggressive ways with Jones, eschewing a field goal on the first series to go for it on fourth down — and was rewarded with a conversion and later a touchdown. Some “tweaks’’ on defense by James Bettcher led to more swarming to the ball and less uncertainty on the back end.
