Saints vs. Cowboys: Don’t sleep on underdog New Orleans

The storyline we have heard coming out of Week 3 in the NFL about the Cowboys is twofold: How wonderfully efficient they look, but at the same time, “Who have they played?” The Cowboys are 3-0 and have wins over the Giants, Redskins and Dolphins, who have one win total between them.

Sunday they will enter a hostile environment at the Superdome. The Saints, conversely, have played a difficult schedule in Houston, the Rams and Seattle, the last two on the road — and through all of that, they are 2-1.

Of course, Drew Brees is injured and it will be Teddy Bridgewater at the controls for the Saints. With the adjustment at quarterback, I made the Cowboys a 1¹/₂-point road favorite in this game. When it opened Dallas -3, I felt this was a go sign on New Orleans.

Sean Payton as a home underdog doesn’t come around too often, and the last time it did, the Saints throttled the Rams, 45-35. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is putting up beautiful statistics so far this season, but now, against a real team, those numbers might not plummet, but are likely to regress.

The play: Saints, +2¹/₂ (if you are patient, you may be able to get +3). And give me a small portion of that wager on the money line, too, as I think there is a good chance New Orleans will win this game outright.
