President Trump warned Thursday morning that the stock markets would crash if he is impeached.
“If they actually did this the markets would crash. Do you think it was luck that got us to the best Stock Market and Economy in our history. It wasn’t!” the president said in a tweet.
“THE GREATEST SCAM IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POLITICS!” he added a few minutes later.
Trump’s tweets come as the declassified whistleblower’s complaint about his interactions with Ukraine is expected to be released as early as Thursday morning, according to reports.
Also on Thursday, acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire is set to speak publicly for the first time about the matter before the House Intelligence Committee.
Democrats will seek to find out why he withheld the complaint from Congress for weeks.
On Wednesday, the White House released a rough summary of a July 25 phone call in which Trump repeatedly pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
Amid reports Tuesday that an impeachment inquiry was imminent, the Dow Jones dropped 0.5 percent, the S&P 500 slipped 0.8 percent and the Nasdaq dropped 1.46 percent, according to The Hill. While Tuesday marked the worst day for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq in a month, markets later rebounded Wednesday.
Trump has warned before on what financial effects a possible impeachment would have.
“I think that if I ever got impeached, the market would crash,” he told Fox News in an interview last August. “Everybody would be very poor.”
