Cam Newton out another week as Panthers cling to Kyle Allen

Cam Newton is already ruled out for Week 4, the Panthers announced Monday.

Newton, who sat out Carolina’s win over the Cardinals on Sunday, is still nursing a left foot sprain that he re-aggravated in a Week 2 loss to the Buccaneers. The 30-year-old quarterback had a lackluster 71.0 passer rating and negative-2 rushing yards through two games.

“What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot. We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “At this point, we’re going to go forward with Kyle (Allen) as our starter.”

Allen went 19-for-26 for 261 yards with four touchdowns starting in place of Newton in Sunday’s 38-20 victory in Arizona. The 23-year-old undrafted Houston product improved to 2-0 in his NFL career.
