Tom Coughlin will always be there for Eli Manning.
The former Giants coach texted Manning to see how the quarterback was feeling after being benched this week for rookie Daniel Jones, according to NFL Network.
What exactly was said is unclear, though the gesture is hardly a surprise.
It was Coughlin, now the Jaguars’ vice president of football operations, who 15 years ago inserted a rookie Manning for Kurt Warner in what would become a franchise-altering move.
The Giants were 5-4 then, and spiraling, as they are now — 0-2, and already in grave danger of missing the postseason for the fourth consecutive season. The 2004 team finished 6-10.
Manning and Coughlin went on to slay the Patriots twice in the Super Bowl during their 12 years together before Coughlin stepped down in 2015 following three losing seasons.
There was speculation this past offseason that Manning could find himself reunited with Coughlin in Jacksonville, but that went the wayside when the Jaguars signed Nick Foles to a four-year contract worth $88 million.
The whispers re-emerged when Foles broke his left clavicle in Week 1 and was lost for the season, though the team appears to be set with 23-year-old Gardner Minshew, who threw two touchdowns for 204 yards in a 20-7 win over Tennessee on Thursday.
Manning struggled in his first two starts, albeit surrounded by a shaky roster, and was benched by coach Pat Shurmur on Tuesday.
