Over 50 horses saved at flooded Texas ranch after historic storms
Farmhands and volunteers fought to rescue more than 50 horses trapped in chest-deep water at a horse ranch north of Houston, Texas, on Thursday, as heavy thunderstorms caused “catastrophic” flooding in the region.
Video of the soggy rescue, posted on Twitter and aired on news outlets in Texas, shows the would-be rescuers at the Cypress Trails Equestrian Center in Humble, Texas, fighting to get horses through the murky, rising waters — as buildings on the horse farm are seen entirely inundated.
One woman is seen swimming to get to some of the stranded horses on a flooded nearby field.
Zach Karrenbrock, who shot video of the attempted rescue, told WCNC-TV that currents from the swollen Cypress Creek made getting to the animals more difficult.
Remnants of Tropical Rainstorm Imelda, which made landfall south of Houston, has spawned thunderstorms that have covered the region in heavy downpours and widespread flooding.
Meteorologists said up to 55 inches of rain could fall in some areas, the most since Hurricane Harvey slammed into Texas in 2017.
AccuWeather called the flooding “catastrophic” on Thursday and said the torrential downpours have created a “life-threatening situation” in some areas.
