Melvin Gordon tries to wrestle leverage back from Chargers amid holdout

Melvin Gordon promised Tuesday that “I’m going to play somewhere” this season.

The rest of the Chargers running back’s future remains cloudy at best.

As he holds out for a new contract, Gordon took to Instagram on Tuesday to tell fans he’d be playing this year and “it would be a waste of talent” if he did not, according to ESPN.

But two weeks of the season are gone and there does not seem to be any progress for Gordon, who is in the final year of his rookie deal that would pay him $5.6 million if he reports to the Chargers. The 26-year-old is reportedly looking to be paid like one of the league’s top running backs, or around $13 million.

The Chargers have already said they are tabling contract talks until the season is over, but they have reportedly granted Gordon’s agent permission to seek a trade.

Gordon must report to the team by Nov. 29 at the latest in order to play this season and become a free agent in the offseason. If he does come back, Chargers fans may not be happy with him after he took a dig at fans — or the lack thereof — during his Instagram chat.

“[Last season] was good, but nobody [fans in Los Angeles] cared,” he said of the Chargers’ 12-4 campaign that ended in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
