The handgun that a career criminal used in a Staten Island shootout Tuesday that left one officer injured was a police-issued handgun stolen from a car in 2016, law enforcement sources told The Post Wednesday.
Gunman Gregory Edwards, 39 — a domestic violence suspect who was killed in the gunfire — fired two shots from a 9 mm Sig Sauer with a serial number matching a gun issued to a Staten Island police supervisor who reported it stolen from his vehicle in 2016, according to the police source.
“It didn’t look like a criminal’s gun,” the source said. ”That raised [cops’] eyebrows right away. It did look like a typical member of service gun.”
It was unclear whether the weapon was stolen from a police car or a personal vehicle.
On Tuesday, Edwards — an ex-con with at least three weapons possession arrests — tried to run from cops who confronted him in the Clifton neighborhood at around 8:45 a.m., according to authorities.
Cops zapped him with a Taser but he shrugged it off, pulled the handgun, and began exchanging fire with police.
Officer Vanesa Medina was injured in the firefight — though it was not immediately clear whose bullet struck the 3-year veteran. She was released from the hospital Wednesday.
