“DOT is aware and will replace the signs within the next two weeks,” a Department of Transportation spokesperson said.
The Post reported Tuesday that visitors sitting on top of the tall tour buses have gummed up several signs in Lower Manhattan by sticking the chewy treat and other paraphernalia to the placards as they pass underneath. Bus workers said the visitors often take photos of their own vandalism.
Mayor Bill de Blasio also weighed in on the situation Wednesday.
“I’m into Instagram, but why is that cool?” Hizzoner said at an unrelated press conference.
“I want to talk to these people and understand why on Earth they think it’s really cool to put bubblegum on a sign. So I’m just like, I need to understand what’s going on in these people’s heads. Maybe we could analyze their psyche, we could figure out a strategy to stop them.”
