Chemical spill forces Mount Sinai Hospital evacuation

A chemical spill at Mount Sinai Hospital evacuated three floors of the medical center Wednesday morning, authorities said.

An FDNY spokesman said at least 150 people were forced to leave the 18th, 19th and 20th floors at just around 11:30 a.m.

Officials said the chemical was sodium butoxide, which is flammable and can severely burn a person’s skin and eyes if they come in contact with the substance, according to the National Institute of Health.

It was unclear how much of the chemical was released.

One firefighter suffered from minor injuries, according to fire officials.

The spill was contained by 12:42 p.m., officials said.
