Sam Darnold hoping to play for Jets after bye week

Sam Darnold might be back with the Jets sooner than initially anticipated.

The quarterback told Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer that he’s feeling a lot better after being diagnosed with mono and said a doctor told him he needs 21 days to recover. Darnold is hoping doctors let him return to the team later this week and return to game action after the Jets’ Week 4 bye.

Darnold was sent home last week and will not play Monday night against the Cleveland Browns. It appears he won’t play in Week 3 against the New England Patriots either, but has a chance to return in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dr. David Chao, who spent 17 years with the Chargers, recently said Darnold would “miss a lot of time.” The concerns are that the spleen or liver can enlarge because of mono. Physical contact must be avoided because of the risk of ruptured organs.

Adam Gase had estimated Darnold lost five pounds, but Darnold told Glazer he hasn’t lost much weight.
