Terry Collins is returning to the Mets’ organization, The Post’s Joel Sherman reported. Collins will be coming back as a senior adviser for player personnel.
The 70-year-old Collins led the Mets to the 2015 World Series and is the franchise’s longest-tenured manager, with a record of 551-583 over seven seasons. He resigned following the 2017 season and remained with the team initially as a special assistant to then-general manager Sandy Alderson.
Robinson Cano and Michael Conforto were given a night off against left-hander Robbie Ray. The Mets, who rolled to a 9-0 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at Citi Field, don’t believe Cano is ready to play more than three games in a row after he recently missed a month with a torn left hamstring. Callaway gave Cano the option of sitting Tuesday or Wednesday, and Cano opted for the latter.
As for Conforto, he had started 30 straight games and was having a rough September, going 7-for-41 with one RBI in nine games. With the Mets in the midst of 13 consecutive games without an off day, Callaway felt this was the right time he got a breather.
The Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones, who won the New York-Penn League crown Tuesday night, watched batting practice on the field before the game. Their manager, Edgardo Alfonzo, played with the Mets from 1995-2002.
Reliever Robert Gsellman threw from 100 feet on Tuesday and said he felt “great,” according to Callaway. He has been out since Aug. 17 with a partially torn right lat.
On the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the Mets wore first responders hats and shirts during batting practice and first responders were on each foul line alongside the teams during the national anthem.
There was a moment of silence held before first pitch. The Mets also wore custom cleats given to them as a present by Pete Alonso to honor the survivors and those who were down at Ground Zero.
