Australian writer charged nearly $100K for a pint of beer

An Australian sports journalist believes he tipped back the world’s most expensive beer when a British hotel charged him nearly six figures for a pint.

Peter Lalor, a cricket writer for The Australian, ordered a Deuchers IPA at a Manchester hotel on Sunday night that was supposed to cost him little more than five pounds, he wrote on Twitter. That would be just over six dollars.

The bartender, however, accidentally charged his credit card £55,315.12 for the suds — equivalent to $99,983.64.

Lalor told the BBC that the hotel is in the process of repaying him the money, but that he won’t rest easy until all of it lands back in his bank account.

“Australians find England pretty expensive usually, but this takes the cake,” he said.

“That’s a lot of money. I’m just a cricket writer, I don’t earn big bucks and it’s costing me in interest,” he added to the news station.

He added on Twitter that the beer was perfectly good — but no pint is worth the cost of a small house.

“It’s a good beer,” he tweeted.

“The original version of it won a heap of awards, including the Supreme Champion Beer of Britain, but if you are thinking that no beer is worth the best part of 100,000 dollars, then I am inclined to agree with you.”
